Loci F and I

Locus F

Locus  I is a single mortared foundation wall of ~20 cm thickness and is at least 2.7m in length. It was likely  the wall of a small dwelling. The masonry foundation may have served to even out the terrain on which the house was constructed. The other faces of the dwelling likely sat on pilings or wooden posts secured into the limestone bedrock. One post hole was recovered near the stone foundation.

Locus I located about 18 meters south of the cistern and 16 meters east of the smokehouse in an area between two field walls.

Household goods were recovered in excavations investigating Locus I.

Units excavated to sample structure I had mean dates between 1785 and 1803. The Locus I structure, likely an enslaved household, seems to have been abandoned after emancipation based on these dates.

The highest count of Afro-Caribbean ware at the Hughes Estate site was recovered from the excavations surrounding the Locus I structure.
